Lesson Time & Arrival
Lessons will begin and end promptly at the scheduled times. You may arrive 5 minutes prior to the scheduled lesson. Parents/legal guardians and siblings of minor students are welcome to sit in on lessons as long as they are not disruptive. The same applies to children of adult students.
Children Under 8
A parent/legal guardian is required to sit in on lessons for children under 8 years of age. This is to help ensure that the parent can assist the child at home with their piano studies.
Student’s Piano & Maintenance
Students are required to have a piano at home. An acoustic piano is preferable, but digital pianos are an option. If an acoustic piano, please have it tuned at least once a year (late spring or mid to late fall, not in the summer due to temperature and humidity). I can recommend piano tuners/technicians, if needed. If you have a digital piano, ensure the piano has 88 keys; one with weighted keys will more closely mimic the experience of playing on an acoustic piano.
Practice Time
How much a student should practice depends on the students age and level of playing. Consistency (practicing less time every day 5 days a week) is better than less but longer sessions (practicing just a couple days for an hour). Young beginner students should practice at least 5-10 minutes a day, with practice time gradually increasing to at least 30 minutes a day as the student’s playing level increases.
Absences & Make-Up Lessons
Make-up lessons for absences will be given during the designated make-up lesson dates. Up to 2 absences for reasons other than illness are allowed per session (spring, summer, fall) with a minimum required 24-hour notice (see Illnesses section for exceptions). The lesson fee may still be charged for additional absences beyond the allowed amount, cancellations with a notice of less than 24 hours, and no-shows. Any lessons that I cancel will be made up or, if I am unable to make them up, fully refunded.
Illness
If you have experienced any of the following symptoms within the 24 hours prior to your lesson time, please cancel your lesson as early as possible:
-
fever of at least 100ºF
-
cough
-
sore throat (unless from environmental allergies)
-
Runny nose (unless from environmental allergies)
-
vomiting
-
diarrhea
-
chills
-
body aches
-
new loss of taste or smell
-
any other signs of illness
Family members who are experiencing these symptoms should also refrain from coming with students to lessons. Cancellations due to the above symptoms will be made up during the designated make-up lesson dates.
If you are recovering from illness, you can still come to your lesson if you have had no fever for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication, e.g., Tylenol or Advil, it has been at least 5 days since the onset of new symptoms, and overall your symptoms are improving. Please inform me of your illness and wash your hands immediately upon arrival, and please practice good hygiene out of consideration for other students.
If I or one of my family members are ill within the 24 hours prior to your lesson time, I will notify you as soon as possible to cancel the lesson and/or give you the option of still coming to your lesson if you feel comfortable to do so.
